He graduated in 1967 from University of Southampton with a
BSc degree in Mathematics and is a past member of
the British Computer Society and a
Chartered Engineer.
Since joining IBM in 1967 Julian has
held a number of technical, staff and
managerial posts in the UK and on assignment
with IBM in the USA, finally joining the IBM
UK Laboratory Senior Management Team in the
new position of Technical Resources
Program Manager responsible for the
overall vitality of the Laboratory's 1500
technical employees, reporting to the
Laboratory Director. Julian was responsible
for creating and executing the Lab's
Talent Plan and reporting progress
quarterly to IBM US Executives. He was also a
member the Recruiting Council responsible for
hiring about 100 university graduates each
year as well as running the 'gap year' and
'summer employment' programmes for some 120
students. During this period, Julian chaired
a regular IBM Liaison Meeting with faculty
heads at the University of Southampton and
sat on curriculum boards at the Universities
of Southampton and Leeds. He also represented
the Laboratory at meetings of the Hampshire
and Isle of Wight Learning and Skills
Council.
Julian's background is in operating systems,
networking and transaction processing where
he held a number of technical positions in
systems software architecture, design and
development before taking his first
management position as Technical Planning
Manager for Customer Information Control System (CICS) in 1978. Julian went
on to hold positions as System Test and Tools
Manager, Product Release Manager, and then
Development Manager for Transaction
Processing in 1989.
In 1991 Julian was appointed Strategic
Planning Manager for the IBM UK Laboratory.
From 1993 Julian was IBM's cross-divisional
Systems Manager for Video Conferencing and
Collaborative Working and represented IBM at
the International Multimedia
Teleconferencing Consortium (IMTC),
before moving to the Laboratory's Services
and Technology Department in January 1996 to
manage the Industry Solution Development
Centre. In 1999 he became Program Manager
responsible for software development projects
within the Services and Technology Department
and joined the Lab's Senior Management Team
to create the Technical Resources Program
Manager role. Julian retired from IBM in July 2002.
Julian lives in Romsey, Hampshire, with his wife, Sue, and
has two daughters: Katherine graduated
Oxford Brookes with a BSc in
Business studies, and a Major in Retail and
Distribution; Victoria graduated King
Alfred's College Winchester as a Registered
Nurse. Julian was a Romsey Town Councillor 2003-2007.
His interests include Walking, Good Eating,
Motor Racing, Reading, Travelling and
Transatlantic Postal History. He is the
chairman of the Hampshire Philatelic Federation.
Julian has contributed to Look at Romsey, Romsey 2020 and Romsey Future
and is a member of Romsey and District Society.
